Texas Instruments TI-89 Graphing Calculator by J2K
| Everyone likes math, right? There is really nothing in the world more satisfying than solving problems that anyone under the position of NASA's head engineer will never have to actually figure out. Well, on the harder problems, most of us are too dumb to do it in our heads. The TI-89 tries to make the work a little easier. Does it succeed? Read this review to find out, you geek! | |
The TI is only loosely based on the rapper, T.I. The only thing they have in common is their color. So you don't have to worry about it getting "jiggity jiggity fresh ya'll," if that was a major concern you had.
Sex Appeal
Just like Owen Wilson, everything about the calculator's face makes me uncomfortable. There's numbers and letters everywhere, all with two sub-buttons. However, there's a nice little assortment of colors, and the button layout is nice. Other than that, there's nothing much to look at, except the screen, which is nothing special. I frown and give it 6/10.
 | Usability
What a mess! You have to press a dozen buttons to do the simplest things. This is, of course, math's fault for having so many functions. But I'm going to take it out on the calculator anyway for being an accessory after the fact. It's a pretty bad sign when you find out there is actually a "TI-89 for Dummies." Sorry, TI, but you get a 3/10. |
Effectiveness
It does what it's supposed to. You can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. But if those are the only features you need on your calculator, it may be wise to settle on one below the price of a new PT Cruiser, which is about what the TI-89 costs. It can do advanced functions and graphs, but you won't want to because it takes around thirteen button presses to enter the number seven. You can also hook it to your computer to download Malcolm in the Middle sound bytes, and I think you can get a digital Frankie Muniz to help you find slopes. Since it can technically do a whole lot of things, I'll throw in a 10/10.
The Texas Instruments TI-89 Graphing Calculator does what it should, but it's very complicated and awkward to use. Also, it's not solar. Come on TI, this is the 21st century!
